Stillness, wind now rain!

We have had the most amazing stillness here for the past few weeks, it was incredible…. the sea looked so peaceful (and inviting, but the cold put paid to actually attempting to go out!) i went winkling with Jam (fisherman) and it was strangly hypnotising found i’d been out for quite a while before i realised my hands were numb with the cold!  anyway the downside of the stillness meant no wind for our turbine, which meant little power and no hot water!!!  I attempted a cold shower for a milisecond before retreating back to the village and Jam’s house for a lovely warm one.  this last week the wind has returned, with passion, its amazing how quickly it changes.  We spent the night on Iona (neighbouring Island) on friday, and as we walked to the north of the island, we were nearly blown off our feet, amazing feeling - a bit scary though…. they are so exposed there, the wind hammered away all night quite violently, made being snuggled in the warmth even more magical and cosy.

and now… well its just started to rain. Boo and Growler have started to go outside, they are so funny, Growler is much braver (which i am surprised about as he is the more tame of the two) Boo does his normal timid thing of holding back and watching.  I managed to entice Growler to the sea edge by pulling his toy monkey on a string all the way down with me, he got scared though and soon ran back.  As i looked up across the bay, there was a baby (maybe teenage) seal sitting on the rock in front of me…. beautiful, he got spooked when i moved so stood incredibly still and watched for about 5 minutes, before attempting to come back for camera, and then he was away.  I’m fixed on that point now, i have not seen a seal that close before, during the summer of course, when this place is full of noisy folk they wouldn’t dare come so close.

The chickens are still not here yet as the coop (super delux!) has yet to arrive!  Guess the weather is a reasonable excuse for slow delivery.  I have been reading about how the stalks of the sprouting and brocolli is good for them, and they love it so will be keeping this for them.  We’re going to head out to the garden soon, good the weather is getting milder as means we can start preparing the beds for spring….

I’m going to attempt to post some pictures…. thank you for comments, i’ve never done blogging before - all good! XX

Welcome to my new life!

On the 26th June 2009 i packed up all my belongings and drove over 500 miles to start my new life on Mull.  Leaving behind friends, family and my lovely little house, i was nervous but sure this was the right thing to be doing.  Six months on and although the weather has changed considerably, it is Freezing! current snow on ground, and dark for most of the time - although getting lighter now… i am even more sure this was the right thing, and i love it even more!

Island life is certainly something to be experianced, the place, the pace of life is something to be experianced… time slows down here, although at the same time speeds up.  Days are long and slow but in a good way, you can fit so much more in.  I go to bed each night tired from a healthy day outside, just having the freedom to spend time outside - and as part of my job, i know i am a very lucky person!

The job is the reason i moved here… although i like to think had i not been offered it i would have made it to the highlands some other way!  Having spent all my childhood holidays on Mull, mostely staying at a remote run down, very basic youth camp, complete series of bizarreness when at least 16 years later i stumble across said camp and an advert for someone to run it! wow! I saved the information went away, but remembered the deadline, and in the nick of time decided to apply, not really thinking i stood much chance, anyway 6 months later and i am here, running the place, making it more and more my home each day, and sharing my life with a whole new bunch of people.

I’m actually here on my own at the moment, the other staff being away for the winter, coming back next week, i say i’m on my own, i have the pleasent company of the other amazing thing to have happened to me since coming here, my very own fisherman! ha ha he is currently singing (badley - i might have to tell him to shut up in a minute!!) irish songs, he is in love with ireland, a long travel trip busking (i dont know quite how much he made from this, i like to think lack of practice has done him no favours!) all over Ireland several years ago has stayed with him, i think he wishes i was irish (i am a bit, but this doesnt count) in fact i think he wishes i was anything but English, there really is a thing there still you know… I cant understand it, have to say i have been suprised by how many English folk are living on Mull?

I also have 2 cats - Little Boo and Growler, they are Kittens really but i’m wishing them to grow up soon, they too scared to go outside (i guess it is a bit cold), so this means poo’ing in the litter tray which is smelly and I seem to be emptying every half hour!  They are lovely, i never thought about cats before, i couldnt really i suppose living in the city.  And my most exciting venture is arriving next week - CHickens!! I think they may take up some blog space, i cant wait!

Anyway, I dont know how well i’ll keep this up but i am hoping this Blog will be a space to record my life up here, and maybe add the odd beautiful photo too (i’m still in the clicking at everything phase, although i am told this will fade, cant see it happening yet!)

Peace and Love XXX
